Educating yourself. What is the right practice for you?

You’re so excited you are getting ready to graduate but you’re not sure what office is best for you.

The job hunt can be hard and sometimes you need to try something and to help you figure out what you truly like to do.  You will have many different types of offices you could work at.  Do you want to work for a big corporate office with lots of locations or would you like to keep it smaller and work at a privately owned office or maybe you're lucky and can work at an office with 3 or 4 dentists?  These are questions you have to ask yourself in your dental career journey.  You also have the choice of Periodontics, Endodontics, General, Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, and Pediatric Dentistry.  Keep in mind with multiple Dentists in an office you may have to work with one or all of them.  Meaning you will have to work to understand each Dentists’ protocols.  If you are a great multi-talker this could totally be your thing.  All of these are important decisions you should make sure to educate yourself on.  Chances are you don’t get to do an internship at all of these.

The next best thing I suggest doing is to do a working interview to see how the team is, are they having fun, are the patients happy?  The choice you make all depends on your personality. Understand that each office has a personality of its own so make sure the office fits best with you.

We all have to choose things based on our personal lives as well.  Is the office close?  Will it be too far to drive?  Also a good tip is to see if you feel a good connection and would possibly end up having a good mentor in the office you are looking at.  No matter what anyone says you will have to learn new things. Each office has its own structure and ways.  Maybe the office that has time to teach you would be the best fit.  After all your hard work, you choose to find the right office.  Congratulations graduate and best of luck in finding your new office.
